Via Taegan Goddard's Political Wire, we learn about this study from the Project for Excellence in Journalism. The study finds that media coverage of both Bush and Kerry's characters is negative this year -- but that coverage of Kerry's character has been negative by a factor of five to one, whereas coverage of Bush's has been negative by a factor of three to one. Bush is regularly depicted as arrogant and lacking in credibility, the survey says, but also as a strong and decisive leader, whereas Kerry is depicted as a flip-flopper, a very liberal person, an elitist, and, sometimes, as a tough guy. Oh, and there's been far more coverage of Bush than of Kerry -- the margin is 72% to 28% -- so Kerry loses on quantity as well as quality.
