IS GLEN URQUHART QUOTING BRYAN FISCHER?

Right Wing Watch notes that Glen Urquhart, the Republican who's running for Delaware's lone House seat, seems even more extreme than the party's Senate candidate, Christine O'Donnell. Urquhart has said (video below):

Do you know, where does this phrase separation of Church and State come from? Does anybody know? ... Actually, that's exactly, it was not in Jefferson's letter to the Danbury Baptists. He was reassuring that the federal government wouldn't trample on their religion. The exact phrase 'separation of Church and State' came out of Adolph Hitler’s mouth, that’s where it comes from. Next time your liberal friends talk about the separation of Church and State ask them why they’re Nazis.

It's quite likely Urquhart didn't just make that up. Remember Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association, who recently called for a complete ban on mosque cxonstruction in the U.S., and who's argued that gay sex is "a form of domestic terrorism, that America should deport all Muslims, and that Hitler was gay and recruited gay soldiers for their viciousness? Well, Fischer wrote a column in 2008 called "Separation of Church and State: Straight from the Mind of Hitler."

...Hitler crafted two slogans in particular, and these became the bulldozers he used to push the church to the margins of the culture and so squelch its freedom to speak truth to power that the liberty of the entire world was soon threatened. Liberty was only preserved at the cost of millions of lives, including hundreds of thousands of America's finest young men.

These slogans, mind you, do not come from the United States Constitution or from Thomas Jefferson or from the mind of the Founding Fathers. These slogans come straight from the mind of Adolph Hitler, and bear a sobering similarity to the mantras of the ACLU, Americans United for the Separation of Church and State and the Freedom from Religion Foundation.

Here they are, straight from the mind of Adolph Hitler:

"Politics do not belong in the Church."

"The Church must be separate from the State." ...

Is he Urquhart's source?

By the way, Fischer will be speaking at this year's Values Voter Summit, where other speakers who have no qualms about sharing a podium with him include (yes) Christine O'Donnell as well as the likes of Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney, Virginia governor Bob O'Donnell, Nerwt Gingrich, Jim DeMint, Sean Hannity, James Inhofe, and William Bennett.

A list of Fischer's more outrageous pronouncements is here.

Oh, and by the way: Urquhart said this in April, during the GOP primary campaign for this House seat -- and he won the contested primary anyway. What does that tell you about Republican voters this year? (He did walk the remark back after the clip surfaced on YouTube in June. Full story here.)
